After catering holiday parties for decades, we’ve learned a few things about how to host the perfect holiday party. And we’re willing to pass along our favorite tips to you. Use these ideas to take the pressure off of your holiday hosting.
#1. Have enough food available
There’s nothing worse than running out of food mid-party, so be sure to have enough food available throughout the event. Ask guests to RSVP so you can get at least an estimated attendee count (there are always a few that either don’t show up or extras that come at the last minute, so take that into account). Offer bountiful platters or displays of food. Guests aren’t afraid to fill their plates when it looks like plenty of food is available.
Tip: Create a bread, deli meats and olives display and keep it stocked throughout the event.
#2. Offer a drink upon arrival
Offer mimosas for a holiday brunch or a festive glass of wine as soon as your guests arrive. Play the perfect host and serve the drinks with holiday cocktail napkins or on a decorated tray.
Tip: Create a colorful Poinsettia cocktail with just three ingredients: Pour ½ ounce orange liqueur and 3 ounces cranberry juice into a champagne flute, and top with 3 ounces Champagne. Garnish with an orange twist.
#3. Deck the halls
Put up your holiday decorations and set the lighting low to create a warm and cozy holiday feel. Design a beautiful tablescape and buffet with your holiday china, tablecloth and linens. Use various-sized vases to hold holiday flowers and greenery, but be careful not to use natural elements with strong scents that will compete with the aromas of your food. Create a warm and vibrant feel with candles.
Tip: White is a color that goes with everything. Use white plates or a single-color theme for an elegant no-fuss service.
#4. Provide a take-home gift
If you are having a seated holiday dinner, place a beautiful ornament at each setting tied with a ribbon. This can serve as a holiday gift. Or create take-away boxes of holiday cookies, brownies or other goodies. Place these at each place setting or locate a basket by the door so guests can help themselves as they leave.
Tip: Cook up some homemade Peppermint Bark that your guests will love. Pack it in candy boxes or small white bags adorned with ribbons and snowflakes. (Get the recipe in our previous post!)
#5. Don’t Worry!
Remember that your guests are thrilled to attend your holiday party and will enjoy anything and everything you offer. Take the time to plan in advance, then don’t stress once your guests begin to arrive.
