When you and your fiancé are vegans, planning your wedding catering can be tricky. However, there are ways to make sure your preferences are kept while at the same time, you provide a sumptuous reception for your guests who may or may not be vegan themselves.
It’s easy when you use a caterer that understands the subtleties of the vegan lifestyle—like Maison Culinaire. We understand that some of the common foods that vegans avoid include meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, dairy, eggs and honey and can design an exquisite wedding menu using the freshest ingredients, most of which are sourced locally.
Choosing a Vegan Wedding Menu
When choosing your vegan wedding menu, there are plenty of delicious options you can offer your guests. Consider these:
- Burritos & nachos
- Pasta and lasagna dishes
- Veggie burgers (the “Impossible” burger is all the rage now)
- Vegetarian dishes
- Pizza (vegetarian)
- Stir fry
- Beans, nuts and seeds
In addition, many more-traditional dishes can be altered to include vegan substitutes for meat and dairy products. Think tofu, plant and nut milks, and plant-based sweeteners like maple syrup.
While planning a vegan wedding isn’t the easiest route to wedding reception catering, it can certainly be done by a seasoned caterer, like Maison Culinaire. Chef Sus consistently studies cuisines from cultures around the globe to discover new flavors, recipes and foods. She will work with you to design the ideal menu for your special day.
You can choose a formal catering service, with plated meals, or go casual with a buffet-style service. Help-yourself or catered stations are another idea, and allow guests to flow around the room while eating and chatting with other attendees.
What is Vegan?
In 1944, a small group of vegetarians formed the Vegan Society in England in order to support their desire not to eat products of animal origin, including eggs, dairy and meat. The term itself was a shortened word for “vegetarian,” and supports the plant-based diet of vegetables, fruits, leafy greens, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains.
Veganism describes the whole way of life that attempts to eliminate the use of animal products and animal exploitation from the diet or for use in clothing, furnishings, or any other purpose. Many vegans choose this path for ethical reasons; they don’t support the raising of animals for human use or the physical and psychological stress raised animals go through.
Others choose veganism for the health benefits. It has been shown that a plant-based diet can reduce your risk of heart disease, cancer, and Type 2 diabetes. It also helps one to avoid the ingestion of hormones and antibiotics used to treat animals.
A third reason people might choose to go vegan is to help the environment. Fewer animals can reduce the methane, carbon dioxide and nitrous oxide emissions by a significant amount. Water consumption used by animals can also be reduced, and put towards raising crops and grains.
