Food Resolution #3: Visit the Farm
There are a number of “pick your own” places throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area where you can pick fresh fruits and vegetables yourself. It doesn’t get much fresher than that! Try picking strawberries in the spring and apples in the fall. Agritourism is also a popular way to experience local farms. You can meet Angus beef cattle in person or go trout fishing to catch your own meal, for example. There are usually plenty of activities for kids as well.
Food Resolution #4: Reduce Food Waste
Sadly, Americans throw away approximately $165 billion in food every year, according to the United States Department of Agriculture, with dairy products accounting for the largest share. In easier-to-relate-to numbers, that’s about 40% of all the food we buy! More than 80% of Americans may be prematurely tossing out food because they misunderstand the “sell by,” “use by,” and “best before” expiration dates, says the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), a nonprofit environmental action group. Most food is perfectly good even after the noted date. The solution might be to buy less at each shopping trip and try to incorporate what you buy into that week’s meals.
Food Resolution #5: Grow Your Own
If you have a sunny spot in your yard, try your hand at growing your own vegetable or kitchen garden. There’s nothing like a fresh tomato, a pot of green beans or a fragrant herb to spice up any meal. If you only have a patio, use large pots to grow your plants.
